Issues - Legislation

  • Immigration
The agriculture community is facing a severe labor shortage. 70% of America's agricultural workers are undocumented. The supply of experienced farmers falls far short of the demand. SAF urges the swift passage of AgJobs, the Agricultural Job Opportunity Benefits and Security Act (S. 359, H.R. 884), a workable solution to the H-2A program to source foreign seasonal workers.

  • The Death Tax
SAF strongly opposes the death tax and supports significant reform and permanence given that repeal in is not possible in the current political environment. Current law phases out the death tax until it is completely repealed in 2010. The death tax will then resume in 2011 unless Congress acts. A permanent solution to the problem must be reached before the current law expires.

  • The Farm Bill
Every five years, the government acts to reauthorize USDA's programs in the form of a Farm Bill. Until now, specialty crops like the floral industry have been pushed to the back of the Farm Bill's policy agenda. Now, for the first time, specialty crops have secured a prominent place at the forefront of farm policy. The passage of this particular bill marks a significant victory for the specialty crops industry, and a step in the right direction for the securing the future of the floral industry.
